The following Pledge was drawn up for signature in January, 1853. The meeting have been held weekly and the names appended are voluntary pledges of the person whose names they purport to be: PLEDGE We, the undersigned citizens of Harrison Township, Potter County, and the state of Pennsylvania, being fully satisfied that the use of ardent spirit as a beverage is injurious to the system of the constitution of man, and for this reason believing firmly in the protection of Divine Providence, we do covenant and mutually agree and solemnly pledge ourselves, that with fidelity and meekness we will abstain ourselves from the use thereof for the term of three months. At first being changeable beings, and aware of our nature, three months at first total abstinence is a reasonable time for consideration; and if it shall appear beneficial at the end of three moths, wither in health or wealth, or in any other manner, then the respective signer of the Pledge shall continue the cause so much further as it shall appear to be beneficial, or advantageous, or in any way appertaining to the peace and happiness of their respective families or community. And in order to promote the cause, we believe it necessary to frequent ourselves together and have a discussion upon the subject to temperance, and of righteousness, and of judgment to come, free for every one to express his view upon the subject. And in case one shall have signed this Pledge and considered themselves misled, or in any way wronged by so doing, it is their undoubted right to withdrawal any time within three months, and the disapprobation of the members shall not be upon him. To this we all agree and set our respective names. P. P. Erway Abraham Deremer James Dodge Prudence Hawks Nathaniel Hubbard Jason Stevens K. Thompson Kelsey Stevens John L. Trion J. L.
