The fourth of July celebration was a success.  Without a doubt the largest crowd ever gathered at Harrison Valley.  Estimated from twenty five hundred to three thousand people present.  Oration by Hon. Chas. D. Baker of Corning.  Westfield Cornet Band did themselves much credit by their music.

DIED at his home in Harrison Township, Aug. 10, 1885, Peter Dennis in the 79th year of his age.  He was born Sept. 1806 in the town of Caroline, Tomkins Co. N.Y. Age 20, married Anna Vorhies, with whom he lived over thirty years.  They raised nine children.  All born in Caroline.  He wished to go to a new county to provide homes for his children.  Wife objected, being in poor health, and unwilling to give up her church privileges.  He left her and the oldest son, Eli, in charge of the farm, and taking nearly a thousand dollars, the avails of his personal property, he went to Jasper, N. Y. and purchased two hundred acres of land.  In 1859 his wife died after a short illness.  The next year he married Marry Quick, sold out in Jasper and moved to Potter County, settling in Harrison Township on what is now known as Dennis Hill.  He bought three hundred acres of land, most of which he has now divided among his children.  By second wife, he raised three children, all of whom are living.

Our new Postmaster, Hamilton White, took possession of the Post Office Saturday night, removing it to Harrison Brothers’ store.  Hamilton White’s new house is completed and ready for occupancy.  He will move in a few days.  Such buildings are an addition to any country town. (First house on left of bridge driving north of town).

J. E. Leonard of North Fork has four chairs made at Marlin Square, N. Y. in 1795 for Aaron Peet and have been in constant use ever since.  The legs are worn off over an inch.  The bottoms are of soft maple and the bows are of elm.

There is considerable excitement in the vicinity of White’s Corners over a gang of counterfeiters that have been dealing in counterfeit half dollars.  There have been several arrests made by H. Burtis of Wellsville.  Jack Dunn was the first one arrested in the vicinity, but we understand there have been presume that the chap who had his money hid in the woods thinks he sold himself cheap.
