Horton

John

It seems a pity that the fair portion of our township, drained by Marsh Creek should be forever called Sodom.  We have heard old citizen tell how it came by its name.  “In olden times the directors of Harrison School District employed one John Horton of Spring Mills to teach school in the north west part of the town.  At the time the intelligent young people of Spring Mills and North Bingham had debating schools which met at the North Bingham school house every Friday evening.  One cold, stormy evening a question of national importance was to be settled.  John Horton was chief disputant on the affirmative.  The society waited nearly an hour from him to come and open the debate.  At last he came in and before he had time to shake off the snow, he was called on to speak.  John a brilliant lawyer now and a fluent talker; but in those days he stammered greatly.  He began his speech with an apology for being late, ‘I k-k-kept a b-b-b-boy after school and have w-w-w-walked s-since d-dark all the w-w-way from S---S-Sodom.’ The way John stammered out the word Sodom sounded so comical that it made an impression on the audience, and the name has stuck to that part of the county ever since.”
