Jason Stevens died Sunday evening, March 5, 1893, age 53 years, 9 months, and 10 days.  Was born in Cortland County, N. Y. His parents settled in Harrison Township when he was but ten years old.  He enlisted in the Civil War Oct. 6, 1861, in Company C., 53rd Penna. Volunteers.  Re-enlisted Dec. 20, 1863 in same.  Served until end of War.  Was wounded twice; at Fredericksburg, Dec. 14, 1862, and at Petersburg, June 18, 1864.  Was commissioned Captain Aug. 26, 1864.  Mustered out June 30, 1965.  He then engaged in farming.  Was elected County Treasurer in the fall of 1866.  In 1869 he entered the mercantile business at Harrison Valley.  Was Postmaster at Harrison Valley from 1869 to 1885.  Has twice married.  1st, to Angie Darling of Allegheny Township, Potter County, by who he has one son, Archie.  2nd, to Rilla Rexford of Tioga, Pa., by whom he had four children; Lina, Mildred, Arthur, and Lura.  Mildred died at an early age.

Mrs. Jane L. Johnson died in Harrison June 29th aged 83yrs., 7mos. 29 days.  Born in Jefferson. Now called Watkins in 1809.  Married Amos Hawkins in 1826.  Had three sons.  Two living now.  Husband died in 1834.  Married Winchell Johnson in 1837.  Had six children.  Three living now.  Has lived in Potter Co. since 1838.  Second husband died in 1863.

The last legislature passed a law providing for registration in Register and Recorder’s office all births and deaths in counties.  Township and borough assessors are to gather this information.  Receive five cents for each birth and death reported to Commissioners.  Clerk of Orphan’s Court to record such registrations and to receive five cents for each one registered.  Assessors fined $10 for every omission and persons who withhold information to receive similar fine.  July 19, 1893

Friday noon, M. R. Swetland, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Harrison dropped suddenly away at his home just side of Harrison Valley.  He was taken ill Wednesday, but was not thought to be dangerously ill.  Died in his chair.  Was in many respects a remarkable man, being exceptionably well informed on many subjects.  Since 1856 he kept a daily diary of local events.  This diary is said to be a complete history of the community in which he lived.  He was a man of most sterling integrity, prominent in church work, and having a strong influence for good in every way.  He will be sadly and universally missed.
