Stevens |
S. K. |
About three A. M. Feb. 7, 1898, Mr. S. K. Stevens was awaken by the crackling of flames, which started he thinks in the ask barrel in the woodshed. A half bbl. Of mixed paint and several gallons of oil were on fire. His son, Herbert and wife were all the people in the house. They fought fire for some time without waiting to dress, calling in vein for help. Young Stevens had to go some distance to arouse the neighbors. A few gathered and assisted in saving part of the furniture. Mr. Stevens working in the most dangerous places, his face and hands being burned. Remarkable that the house and timbers were consumed standing. It was built of clear pine, put finely together. The carpenter was a blind man named Badgero. It was large and one of the best farm houses in the county. Has carried $1000 insurance, but it had expired. The house was well furnished and when the son moved in he brought more. Had brought his wife’s organ home only two days before. She can thank Charley Smith that it was saved. Four stoves lost. All goods in the chamber, including the youngest boy’s bicycle. The night was still or the barn would also have burned. Have moved into Charley Smith’s house across the way, the tenants being induced to go into another house a mile away, thus leaving them near their barn and stock. |
